There is no point in emailing Alan. He has resigned as Convenor and from the NEC.

Shocked3

I am very, very sorry to hear that. My impression of Alan was that he was a great asset to the HSS.

What do you mean 'was'?

Alan is more than a great asset, he is the HSS's greatest ambassador. This is very bad news for humanism in Scotland. Alan, I don't know the circumstances of your resignation but I wish you all the best and hope that you are OK.

This is very bad news. Sad

Before Alan took over the reins, the HSS felt like a shambles organisationally and financially. He successfully managed the change from it being three disparate groups and was responsible for many of the improvements that have made it what it is today. He is, above all, a man of integrity and he will be sorely missed.

The NEC don't look too good in all this and I am seriously concerned about the future. What on earth is going to happen?

I was really upset to hear about Alan's resignation, though I don't know any of the details. I have always felt that the HSS was safe in his hands and he has made an enourmous contribution to the Society in so many different ways.

I dread to think where we go from here, but Alan, there are people out here who appreciate what you have done for us!

What can I say? all I can do is agree completely with what has already been said.
Thanks for everything Alan.

I am shocked and saddened to learn that Alan Henness has resigned.
He has been a hard-working representative for Humanism in Scotland and he has achieved a great deal in his role as Convenor.

Humanism in Scotland has suffered a setback.

I do not know what events led up to this decision, but I hope that the Executive of the HSS will review the whole episode thoroughly and objectively and try to resolve the core issues.

With best wishes to Alan and to all his fellow Humanists in Scotland,

Les Reid

I agree with everyone else. Alan's boundless enthusiasm, commitment, initiative and hard work over the years has been an inspiration and his resignation is an enormous setback for the HSS.

In the dealings I have had with Alan I have unfailingly found him to be helpful, supportive and encouraging. And all with a ready sense of humour too.

Whatever the reasons and background for his resignation, of which I know nought, I would just like to say thank you.

Best wishes Alan, and the very kindest regards,

Des

Alan, you are much too important to the HSS to let the bastards grind you down. I very much hope you will seek re-election at the AGM, with the backing of all of us who value what you have given to this Society over so many years.

Alan, Although I've never met you, I've always had a favourable impression of you and I know that your contribution to the HSS has been unequalled.

Sad Hi, I ' m chair of HUMANI, in Northern Ireland. Greetings to all at HSS, I love the mag to which I subscribe.

I don't want to get involved in questioning the internal workings of the HSS, far from it as I wouldnt want the reverse to happen. Nor do I know anything about the circumstances surrounding his resignation. He has been very discreet on that.

I would just like to put forward a purely personal view about Alan Henness. I have known Alan for a couple of years, through Humanist Council of the Isles meetings, his reports on the work of the HSS and as a drinking buddy in the bar(s) afterwards - all across the Islands.

Alan has been an inspiration to Humanist Associations everywhere in the Islands. His ideas, his organising ability, his energy and his encouragement are a shining light for all of us to aim towards. I am truly sorry that he has resigned and really dispirited.

Of course Humanisim does not depend on one person and the work will carry on. But sometimes one person can inspire many and they in turn can multiply the effect and this was Alan's influence.

I hope that Alan can still have a role somewhere. A few years ago I let a situation develop where a long standing stalwart of Humanism walked out. He was the instigator of our famous magazine, the life blood of our organisation. The reasons at the time seemed important and a matter of principle. But over time we saw the bigger picture and we greatly regretted letting him go because it was the cause of Humanism that suffered from our egoism.

Please don't let something happen you live to regret as we do.

Iain
